The University of Miami Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas (UMIA) seeks a Research Associate 2, working with the Director of UMIA and the Director of Research Support for Global Health to provide technical and research support in managing UMIA Director’s global health research portfolio, extensive bibliographic, primary and secondary data, IRB support, co-authoring and coordinating research publications for academic journals and for dissemination, and supporting UMIA in implementing research support platforms across the University and the Americas and linking to the Hemispheric Research Consortium on research initiatives. UMIA work will include an inter-disciplinary focus on the social sciences including public health, economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, and policy analysis.
In addition, the Research Associate 2 will provide administrative support for courses taught by the director on global health and health in the Americas.
The position reports to the Director working closely with the Director of Research Support for Global Health and Senior Manager of Business Operations.
Overview of scope of work:
- Coordinate and participate in primary and secondary data collection and research related to global health topics including women’s cancers, palliative care and pain relief, health systems strengthening and universal health coverage, gender-based violence and women’s labor force participation, with a particular focus on Latin America and the Caribbean
- Compile and manage research materials
- Perform relevant literature reviews and background research
- Assist in compilation and analysis of bibliographic, primary, and secondary data
- Work with staff to develop research programming and convene research meetings
- Co-author academic papers for leading journals and policy briefs
- Participate in outreach activities to and with leaders from the global health community
- Provide support for courses taught by the Director of UMIA
- Opportunities to travel to research meetings and research sites as required
- Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelors’ Degree with demonstrated ability to manage and conduct research that culminates in academic and policy publications. Masters' Degree (in related discipline such as public health, economics, sociology) preferred.
- Experience: Minimum two (2) years of public health, nursing or medicine- related experience, including experience in research, research management, data collection and information management skills, and management and use of extensive bibliographic networks and data.
- Language skills: English and Spanish fluency and demonstrated academic writing ability required. Other language skills helpful, especially Portuguese and French.
