The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has a full time opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Assistant in Miami, Florida. The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of routine duties in assisting technical and professional personnel in clinical and research laboratories. An employee in this position provides broad support for the research and laboratory operations.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Identifies, handles, and accessions patient samples requiring laboratory testing.
Transports specimens and communicates test results timely and accurately.
Maintains required laboratory files and logs system in a neat and accurate manner.
Performs specimen processing, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.
Maintains adequate inventory level as per protocol.
Participates in the performance improvement processes for the department.
Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition.
Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Experience:
No prior experience required, clinical background in Ophthalmology and research is preferred

• Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
• Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
• Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Department Addendum
Department Specific Functions
Works directly with the laboratory director assisting with the microscopic examination of clinical cases, grossing surgical specimens, documenting diagnostic results and acquiring additional clinical information.
Instructs 1st year residents on the gross examination of whole globes received at the laboratory under the direct supervision of the Director
Maintains appropriate databases and ensures accurate written and computerized records
Identifies, handles, and accessions patient tissue samples requiring laboratory testing
Collaborates on data collection, analysis and reporting of scientific findings. Projects focus on malignancies of the ocular surface, orbital tumors and adnexa, ocular infections as well as degenerative diseases
Develops project proposals in line with the research strategy
Assists faculty members and residents with case reports, research, and taking photos of specimens
Ensures all research is undertaken according to good clinical/research practice (GCP)
