The University of Miami has a great opportunity for a Police Sergeant to work at our Coral Gables Campus in Miami, Florida.
The Police Sergeant supervises subordinate officers and agents and maintains the chain of command within the operations of the department. Furthermore, the Police Sergeant develops training programs for department personnel and ensures the safety and security of all staff, students, and general public on University property and grounds.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Creates and implements directives and meets established goals. Leads, supervises, directs, and, when necessary, disciplines department personnel under their command to ensure accountability, adherence to departmental standards, and effective performance.. Reviews, prepares, and approves criminal and administrative reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with departmental standards. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and University policies affecting the assigned area of responsibility. Assists in the development, implementation, and review of emergency operations and incident response plans. Monitors, manages, and provides oversight of incidents, events, and emergency situations to ensure effective and coordinated response. Responds to serious incidents and major crimes, assuming command at the scene and coordinating resources and response efforts. Communicates timely and accurate information regarding critical incidents to key members of the Department, University leadership, and relevant outside agencies to ensure coordinated response and situational awareness. Serves as a point of contact for the public; responds to inquiries and complaints, conducts follow-up investigations, and recommends or initiates appropriate corrective actions. Establishes and continuously evaluates the effectiveness of internal controls within their unit; ensures compliance with university policies and procedures and facilitates training for staff on applicable controls and standards.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field preferred.
Certification and Licensing:
Law Enforcement Certification
Experience:
Minimum 3 years as a police officer with the University of Miami Police Department.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
- Knowledge of business and management principles.
- Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
- Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.
- Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.
- Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions (Special Services Sergeant)
In addition to being assigned to the Patrol Division, a police Sergeant may be assigned to the Support Services function.
The assigned Support Services Sergeant assumes additional responsibilities beyond those outlined in the general Police Sergeant job description. These expanded duties are offset by a reduction in routine patrol sergeant responsibilities to maintain a balanced workload. While the position typically aligns with regular University business hours, it requires flexibility and may include shift work to support patrol operations and/or special events management, as dictated by operational needs.
The omission of specific duties from this description does not preclude the assignment of similar, related, or logically associated tasks or projects that support the objectives of the position or department.

Preferred Qualities
- 5 years of consecutive management/supervisory experience
